Visiting the Valencia Central Market (Mercado Central)

By DH Wall - Posted on November 16, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I like visiting the local markets in every city, whether I'm visiting Granville Island Public Market in Vancouver, Canada or one of the many fantastic public markets throughout Spain.  Unless you buy something, visiting the local public market is one of the best free tourist attractions anywhere.  But Valencia Central Market (Mercado Central) is special because of its size.  The 1928 covered market is one of the biggest of its kind in Europe.

The old Market/Mercado Central

The Valencia Central Market (Mercado Central) is a good place to walk around and pick up some food while experiencing the local culture. The market is full of stands run by local vendors and the foods are usually produced nearby.

Tip: Don't eat Spain restaurant food

...everyday.

Save your euros and time. If you are trying to get the most out of your trip to Spain and see as many sites in one day as possible, buying your meal in a store is a great alternative to eating out.

Plus, shopping for food is fun.

Yes, try to make time for dining out when you can. Just realize that restaurants are as much about the food as much as they are about the experience, the sitting around for a long time chatting with friends. Great food, good times.

When your time is limited, try a market (el mercado) or specialty food shops.
